Every year, over 18,000 people are told they need a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. Most will need a donor from outside their family. From blood disorders to blood cancers, a bone marrow transplant can offer a life-saving cure.
If you would like to become a bone marrow donor and are between 18-60 years old, you will need to complete a health questionnaire and provide either a quick blood test or cheek swab to be entered into the National Registry. The initial testing costs between $45-100. If you are a match, all medical expenses are covered by the recipient or their insurance.
If you are a match, the donor procedure typically takes about one to two hours and involves collecting marrow through an IV catheter.
We do not handle bone marrow transplants or donations directly. However, the following organizations do. Please contact them directly if you are interested.
With rising cancer rates, our work has never been more important. All donations for the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation go to services that directly help cancer patients, survivors, and families. The Foundation relies 100% on private donations. We depend on individual and corporate donors, as we don’t receive government or public funding. We offer innovative ways to contribute, and options for doubling the impact of donations. Thank you for your support, it means so much to so many patients.
