The Truth About Mental Health and Cancer

The sad truth is that people affected by cancer are more susceptible to mental health and suicide concerns than the general population. Studies have shown that approximately 25% of people with cancer experience depression, and suicide risks may be up to 85% higher among individuals diagnosed with cancer compared with the general population. This is across all cancer stages.

This is why it is so important for the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation to have our Clinical Care Counseling program (CCC). We provide licensed therapists for free telephone/video conferencing sessions to help patients, family members and caregivers with emotional support. Telephone/videoconference counseling offers almost complete anonymity and ease, as it allows patients to communicate without traveling. It also allows them to attend sessions when they are not feeling well.

Utilization of the CCC program has increased greatly over the last five years, as the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have added to the anxiety and hindered the care of patients and caregivers dealing with cancer. Increased awareness of the mental health concerns and suicide risk associated with a cancer diagnosis have also driven referrals and outreach to BMCF’s vital support services. Our patients and hospital partners continue to rely on our services to help meet the basic needs of patients, manage the logistics of their care, and provide them with emotional support through an especially difficult time.

I was very moved by the words of our Clinical Care Counseling Cancer Survivor, Elie

“Through battling cancer, I found myself facing not only physical challenges but also emotional and mental hurdles. The free therapy sessions I received were a lifeline during this difficult time. My therapist Eileen provided a safe and compassionate space where I could express my fears, frustrations, and hopes. Through her guidance and support, I gained a deeper understanding of myself and found the strength to navigate the emotional rollercoaster of cancer survivorship. I am incredibly grateful to Clinical Care Counseling for the opportunity to receive such invaluable support during a challenging chapter of my life. These therapy sessions were truly transformative and played a crucial role in my healing journey.”

Thank you to our Elie for sharing her experience. Thank you to our Clinical Care Counseling team and thank you to all of you who support the work we do at the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation. We are so grateful.
